VI Lenin in Regla – Havana – Cuba

This is an unusual rendition of a monument to VI Lenin.

On an area that has been constructed as a public meeting space, complete with a large flat area which would take a large crowd, there’s a slightly raised stage and arrangements for banners and such like.

To the left of this stage a large image of the face of VI Lenin is set into the low cliff that forms the backdrop to the area. The image is made of a black material (perhaps stone or of a strong plastic as I wasn’t able to ascertain exact details) but almost certainly not metal. It is in a very good condition and I could see no signs of damage or wear. It’s an approximate image of the Marxist-Leninist leader but as with others that are documented on this blog there’s just something that isn’t quite right which makes it not an exact reproduction of the likeness of the great Soviet leader.

The image is looking out towards the centre of Havana and the (in 2026) very quiet and almost disused dock system of Cuba’s capital city. One of the very obvious manifestations of the effects of the US imposed blockade and sanctions regime against the country.

Just below and in front of the Lenin’s image is a sculptural group of a dozen, white, life-sized humanoid figures who seem to be ‘celebrating’ being so close to the great proletarian theorist and revolutionary. However, I don’t get it.

Location;

On Colina Lenin, up the steps to the right of the junction between Calle Vieja and Avenida Rotaria in Regla.

GPS;

How to get there;

If the boat is running the easiest way to get to Regla from Habana Vieja is to take the passenger boat from the Luz Landing stage and then walk up the hill from the dock. This is a negligible cost. If the boat is not running, which might be the case as long as the oil embargo continues, then it’s quite a long way around by road. Negotiate the price with a tri-cycle taxi.
