Venezuela – and imperialist aggression
In the early morning of January 3rd 2026 US armed forces made a vicious and unprovided attack upon Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela. In the process the US Special Forces were able to capture the Venezuelan President, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife Cilia Flores. There seems to have been little or no real opposition as the US invaders and kidnappers were able to do their task within minutes and able to leave without sustaining any casualties. In fact, it is difficult to determine whether a shot was fired against either the US land or air forces.
The ease with which the US imperialist were able to carry out their aims, successfully, asks many questions. Why were they able to be so ‘successful’ in their aims? Was the CIA able to infiltrate and/or buy the Venezuelan government and upper military officials? Why was Maduro not, seemingly, prepared for such an action after the threats from the US had been getting more manic by the day? What will be the response of the ‘new’ Venezuelan government? But, more importantly, what will be the response of the Venezuelan people?
Only a couple of days after the even it is difficult (or more likely impossible) to answer any of those questions. Facts, real facts, will be slow in becoming common knowledge. Lies, obfuscation and sheer fantasy will muddy the waters. The only true indicator will be what happens on the ground.
In the lead up to the attack some commentators were predicting that any such incursion on Venezuelan territory by the US armed forces would be the start of a ‘second Vietnam’ for the US. Were those assumptions based upon reality or merely wishful thinking? Even if there is a revolt of the people against the attempt of the US to ‘run the country’ – and steal its resources for the benefit of international capitalism – who or what will constitute the leadership. Even a guerrilla struggle needs a competent, trustworthy and effective leadership. Otherwise any opposition will be isolated, fragmented and end up being destroyed piecemeal.
The aim of this page is to try to record the story as it develops in the coming days and weeks. It might be that the bully will win, that the people of Venezuela will just take what is offered to them by the mad (probably clinically but also metaphorically) occupant of the White House and his equally deranged lieutenants. It might be that the people will chose dignity and attempt to determine their own fate or take back (if it has already been lost) their own country.
The aim will be to maintain this page until some sort of ‘outcome’ is achieved. If it becomes a protracted war then we will be in for the long haul.
