Chinese Literature Magazine 1954
The issues of Chinese Literature were very catholic in their approach in the early years and novels and short stories would cover the wars of liberation against the Japanese and then the reactionary Kuomintang and also the very recent war where Chinese volunteers fought against American Imperialism in Korea.
However, there were also stories from the Chinese imperial era which would have been known by workers and peasants through the oral tradition which were now put down on paper for the new (and constantly growing) literate readers who were benefiting from the first decrees of the Socialist State on universal education.
